Our Connection with Vintage
A friend of mine said to me recently that vintage “isn’t really my thing”. I said to her that well, it’s not for everyone. But the funny thing was that she proceeded to tell me about a vintage purse she owned that she just loved. “I don’t use it a lot but I use it occasionally and for special events”. This got me thinking about our own connection with vintage. Whether it be clothing, dishware, art, or jewelry, we all have some sort of connection with vintage….even if it’s not our “thing”.
For someone like me, it’s about a style and a feeling from the 1960s/70’s that I love. I’ve recently been adding 1960’s/70’s vintage to my home decor as well just so that I can have all the good feels of the decade. For some others, like my friend, I notice it’s a focus on one particular piece that really moves them. It is my belief that most of us have in our possession some form of vintage and that vintage is indeed for everyone.
It’s all about our connection. Like art, vintage pieces can be real statements. They can be reflections of ourselves and how we want the world to see us. When it comes to vintage clothing and jewelry, we wear the pieces of art as a true image of our inner selves. We love the pieces, cherish it and care for it. The same would be for the vintage pieces we add to our homes. In fact, many clothing pieces can actually be pieces of home decor. For example, a customer of mine told me she hung up a 1950s/60s nightie on her closet door so she could see it all the time. It’s as much a part of her bedroom decor as a family photo or a framed painting.
So, when someone says that “vintage is not my thing” I say “give it a try.” There are pieces you may come across that could move you and chances are you already own a few pieces of vintage that you already love and already cherish. Take them out, put them on display and you’ll be making that connection with vintage.
