New Start New Adventures (with vintage)

Well, here we are again. The beginning of a new year full of hope and promises that this year will be the best yet. As I plan for the coming year I look to you, the reader and lover of fine vintage, and wonder: what would you like to read about?

I’m going to suggest, just to get the ball rolling, that we start by talking about the 1960s. What were the happenings and the news in those years? How did people live? What did people wear? But really, and most importantly, what did women wear? Women’s fashion is the topic I’m interested in. And I’m going to guess that you, as a lover of vintage clothing, are interested as well.

But fashion is not an island. It is influenced by the happenings and angst of the times. My first connection to the 1950s and ‘60s was my mom Vivian who, as a teenager, was hooked on Elvis Presley music and Audrey Hepburn movies. My mom talked lovingly about her memories as a teen. She and her friends would go to a hang out called “The Keen Teen” in St. John’s, Newfoundland and have sock hop dances in their bobby socks. You’ve likely heard about sock hops before but my mom often talked about her experiences at these teenage dance parties. They were among her fondest memories.

I’ve mentioned before that naming my business Vivian Moderna is a nod to my mom. And so I start this journey into this year discovering the late 50s into the 1960s and why we love that era so much. Everywhere you look today you see echoes of the 1960s. In today's fashion and home decor we see a retro vibe. So I’m bringing the 60s back! Metaphorically, of course, but I will be dedicating this year to learning about the 1960s: the fashion statements, and the fashion changes throughout the decade. Stay tuned for future blogs about this era but if you’d like to chat a bit more about the 60s join my facebook group! Find me at Vivian Moderna’s Retro Rat Pack and let’s talk about the 60s!

Did you know that my mom, Vivian, also had an influence on my son’s business. He has an import tea business called Eastern Tea Bar. As a lover of tea, his grandma introduced him to the tea world as many grandmas do. But Adam was so intrigued that he took it to the next level and learned about the teas of the world and is always searching for the best tasting teas. Specializing in Chinese tea, the Eastern Tea Bar has curated a great selection of teas to satisfy your palate and can help you find your perfect tea. Eastern Tea bar will be looking into vintage teas. To learn more go to www.easternteabar.com to see the teas they have in stock.
