A Vintage Happy Holidays
Like many of us, in my wildest dreams, I could not have anticipated the drastic changes that we endured during 2020. Only two years into a new business venture - and still learning the ropes - the shows, the pop-up shops and any “in person” shopping became a distant memory.
But despite the challenges, the business of vintage clothing has grown.
Perhaps we are feeling nostalgia of happier times? It could be that we long for the safety and stability of a former era? Maybe we love the history of so many vintage pieces? But for me it’s all about the style of timeless pieces made in an era where quality was valued. It’s about classic shift dresses, blouson peasant dresses, funky maxi dresses, wool skirts and wool sweaters. It’s about ageless, timeless beauty.
When we talk about ‘timeless’ you may agree the styles of the 60s are iconic but not truly timeless. There might be an element of truth to that statement but I strive to find pieces that can be worn through the ages. A 1960s shift dress is similar in form to a 2020 dress. But the eye-popping, iconic wild patterns of the 60s paired with a solid-coloured sweater and modern shoes provides a funky look of today. It’s so much fun to have these iconic fashions in your closet and even more fun to add them to your style.
Additionally, a happy side effect of buying vintage is the impact on our environment - reusing and recycling, especially when the quality of those earlier dresses often means they’re in better condition to fast fashion after just a couple of wears. At the start of 2020 my focus was on vintage fashion that reduced our contribution to the environmental crisis. Buying vintage clothing is a statement of purpose and direction. Not only do you get amazing and timeless pieces that are unique and add to your fashion style but you also do your part to reuse and recycle (upcycle).
So, as we end this year of uncertainty and enter into 2021, it’s good to remember that those fashions that remind us of happier times, that can add a flourish to our staid everyday outfits are also a great way to do our part to help the environment. We can’t control much in this world, as 2020 has taught us, but this is one important task we can do. And, hey, the upside is that we look fabulous while doing our part!
